Jocelyn, known as Joss, began her dental career in the Royal Navy in 1987 and qualified as a dental hygienist in 1992. She has been with the Confident Dental and Implant Clinic team in Gloucestershire since 2007. In 2018, Joss was honoured with The Probe Dental Hygienist of the Year and Phillips Shineon Awards, recognizing her exceptional clinical skills, dedication to patient care, and contributions to advancing dental hygiene practices. Since 2016, Joss has been widely published in medical and dental journals. She played a key role in updating the 2021 GOV.UK DBOH guidelines for mouth cancer prevention and early detection while representing the BSDHT. Joss's commitment to oral health in cancer care is evident through her involvement with the UK Oral Management in Cancer care group (UKOMiC), an organisation dedicated to improving the oral health and quality of life of cancer patients through research and evidence-based care guidelines. From January 2020 to May 2022, she was part of the OMFS team at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital. Joss’s career reached new heights in 2023 when she became President-Elect of the Mouth Cancer Foundation, completed her MSc in Advanced and Specialist Healthcare at Kent University, and was offered a Fellowship by the College of General Dentistry. Additionally, she published a peer-reviewed textbook with Wiley, "Care of Head and Neck Cancer Patients”, with all royalties donated to charity, reflecting her unwavering commitment to supporting cancer patients and advancing oral health education globally. In 2024 Joss’s MSc research project was published in the International Journal of Dental Hygiene and was invited to present at the International Symposium of Dental Hygiene in Seoul. She won first prize with her academic poster at the British Society of Dental Hygiene and Therapy annual Oral Health Conference. Joss collaborates with healthcare professionals to underscore the vital importance of mouth care in the comprehensive treatment of patients throughout diagnosis, therapy, and recovery.
