Karen was diagnosed with tongue cancer in 2016, after not meeting any of the criteria and had life-changing surgery and radiotherapy . Since then, Karen has used her social media platforms to raise awareness of head and neck cancers, and support patients and family members. Karen became a Patient Ambassador with the Mouth Cancer Foundation during Covid and supports patients and family members through various platforms that are available through the MCF. She left her career in education due to late effects of surgery and treatment. Karen now divides her time between family life, support work, and public speaking. She speaks about the impact head and neck cancers have on the patient and their family and educates audiences on the late effects of these cancers, and the impact they have on the mental health and well-being of the whole family unit. Karen works closely with many dental professionals through the Mouth Cancer Foundation to ensure patients are well supported through their medical pathway.
