Learning Content
This presentation draws from MDDUS' case experience and analysis of clinical negligence claims associated with delayed referral, resulting in a diagnosis of oral cancer. Common pitfalls are highlighted along with strategies to reduce risk.
Aims
At the end of the session, attendees will understand how to reduce the risk of an allegation of a delay in referring a patient who subsequently receives a diagnosis of mouth cancer.
Learning Outcomes
- Understand UK guidance on managing oral ulceration and related conditions - Recognise the importance of thorough assessment, accurate documentation, and timely referral - Gain awareness of cases handled by the Medical and Dental Defence Union of Scotland (MDDUS) involving failure to refer and implications for patients later diagnosed with mouth cancer.
