Peri-implant and periodontal inflammation: systemic implications and risk assessment

Learning Content

Peri-implant and periodontal diseases are chronic inflammatory conditions that may contribute to an increased systemic inflammatory burden. Emerging evidence suggests that oral inflammation can influence systemic health, particularly cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and other inflammation-mediated conditions. This session will explore the biological mechanisms linking periodontal and peri-implant inflammation with systemic health, focusing on shared inflammatory pathways and risk factors. Attendees will gain an evidence-based overview of current literature, understand the importance of risk assessment in susceptible patients, and appreciate the role of the dental team in recognising and managing oral inflammatory burden.

The session aims to support clinicians in integrating oral–systemic health considerations into routine dental and implant care using contemporary research and clinical guidance.

Aims

To review current evidence on periodontal and peri-implant inflammation and its systemic implications, focusing on inflammatory mechanisms, patient risk factors, and the role of risk assessment in routine dental and implant practice.
