Suicide disclosure can happen without warning in the dental surgery, leaving oral healthcare professionals unsure of how to respond. This session focuses on the practical realities of what to do when a patient discloses suicidal thoughts or intent during a dental appointment. It offers clear, UK-based guidance on managing the situation in the moment, recognising when emergency services should be contacted, understanding the limits of confidentiality, and documenting and escalating concerns appropriately. Delegates will leave feeling more confident to respond calmly, compassionately and decisively, protecting patient safety while meeting their professional and legal responsibilities.
Aims
To equip oral healthcare professionals with the knowledge and confidence to respond safely to suicide disclosure in dental practice; to clarify safeguarding, legal and professional responsibilities; and to promote consistent, effective practice responses that prioritise patient safety.
